CQ Politics | Mixed Signals Still Cloud U.S. Role in Georgia

From the page: "The Defense Department is having a hard time getting its story straight about U.S. military personnel in Georgia. Pentagon flak-catchers at first told me that only 70 U.S. "trainers"ť remain in embattled Georgia, and that they are "waiting for transportation out of the country." That would leave zero American military personnel or private U.S. contractors working with Georgian troops, Lt. Col. Elizabeth Hibner told me in a brief interview Thursday. Another Pentagon spokesman echoed Hibner. But in a repeat performance of the mixed signals the Bush administration has been issuing about U.S. support for Georgia in the past days, weeks and months, Hibner called back an hour later to say the 70 American military personnel now sequestered somewhere in or around Tblisi" oeare staying in country right now."

From the page: " The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran. The US Naval forces being assembled include the following: Carrier Strike Group Nine USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) nuclear powered supercarrier with its Carrier Air Wing Two Destroyer Squadron Nine: USS Mobile Bay (CG53) guided missile cruiser USS Russell (DDG59) guided missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG92) guided missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG86) guided missile destroyer USS Ford (FFG54) guided missile frigate USS Ingraham (FFG61) guided missile frigate USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG60) guided missile frigate USS Curts (FFG38) guided missile frigate Plus one or more nuclear hunter-killer submarines Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Group USS Peleliu (LHA-5) a Tarawa-class amphibious assault carrier USS Pearl Harbor (LSD52) assult ship USS Dubuque (LPD8) assult ship/landing dock USS Cape St. George (CG71) guided missile cruiser USS Halsey (DDG97) guided missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG65) guided missile destroyer Carrier Strike Group Two USS Theodore Roosevelt (DVN71) nuclear powered supercarrier with its Carrier Air Wing Eight Destroyer Squadron 22 USS Monterey (CG61) guided missile cruiser USS Mason (DDG87) guided missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG94) guided missile destroyer USS Sullivans (DDG68) guided missile destroyer USS Springfield (SSN761) nuclear powered hunter-killer submarine IWO ESG ~ Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group USS Iwo Jima (LHD7) amphibious assault carrier with its Amphibious Squadron Four and with its 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit USS San Antonio (LPD17) assault ship USS Velia Gulf (CG72) guided missile cruiser USS Ramage (DDG61) guided missile destroyer USS Carter Hall (LSD50) assault ship USS Roosevelt (DDG80) guided missile destroyer USS Hartfore (SSN768) nuclear powered hunter-killer submarine Carrier Strike Group Seven USS Ronald Reagan (CVN76) nuclear powered supercarrier with its Carrier Air Wing 14 Destroyer Squadron 7 USS Chancellorsville (CG62) guided missile cruiser USS Howard (DDG83) guided missile destroyer USS Gridley (DDG101) guided missile destroyer USS Decatur (DDG73) guided missile destroyer USS Thach (FFG43) guided missile frigate USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7) fast combat support ship Also likely to join the battle armada: UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal Carrier Strike Group with assorted guided missile destroyers and frigates, nuclear hunter-killer submarines and support ships French Navy nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines (likely the Amethyste and perhaps others), plus French Naval Rafale fighter jets operating off of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the French Carrier Charles de Gaulle is in dry dock, and assorted surface warships Various other US Navy warships and submarines and support ships. The following USN ships took part (as the "enemy" forces) in Operation Brimstone and several may join in: USS San Jacinto (CG56) guided missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG68) guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG60) guided missile cruiser USS Carney (DDG64) guided missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG79) guided missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG81) guided missile destroyer USS Carr (FFG52) guided missile frigate" You can't count out Bush or Cheney, nor their neoconservative cronies. They wanted this war with Iran so it is going to happen. Obama and the Democrats in Congress will, more than likely, do absolutely nothing to stop it.

From the page: "It won't be your grandmother's protest, where police haphazardly sprinted after hippies, but the game ends when the protest is over. This time around, the police presence will be huge, suspicious activity will be loosely defined and cataloged in a huge national database. Furthermore, because so little is known about this huge database, there's no way to know if someone erroneously charged with "suspicious activity"ť will be permanently exonerated for their crime, or if they will forever remain on "The List." In a turn of fate that would make Kafka shudder, simply being accused of guilt could forever brand one guilty." I am sure the majority of people who stop by this blog think I am overreacting to the tactics used by the PIGS lately. To those people all I can say is you are exactly the type of person they want you to be; be a good little boy scout/girl scout, believe ever single lie the PIGS, the feds, or any other person who supposedly has authority over you tells you, and always remember that to lose your freedoms is actually to become more free, just under government control.

I am all for "supporting the troops", especially when said troops are raped, beaten, and murdered by their fellow service members. That this young lady's death has been glossed over and covered up by the very country she joined the military to protect is a disgrace and does away with any notion of honor in the armed forces.

Unfortunately I doubt any of the right people will read this study, and I bet even if they did they would have even less of a chance of implementing it. Our economy depends on this mulit-generational supposed War on Terrorism. The military/industrial complex has worked to make just about every community in this country dependent on the military in one form or another. Be it from jobs producing hardware and equipment to having bases located in just about every single U.S. state, there is a very definite financial incentive to keeping an ill defined and amorphous war going even if the public doesn't want it. Read the Blowback Trilogy by Chalmers Johnson if you want a bit more insight into how the military has made the U.S. dependent upon it and the wars it fights.

Afghanistan should be peaceful and moving on it's way to re-integrating into world politics. Instead the Taliban is resurgent, more Afghani citizens and U.S. troops die, and the entire country is a wreck. Nothing the Shrub junta has attempted in the last eight years has worked out except for the weakening of participatory democracy and the gutting of the U.S. Constitution. Those two things went off without a hitch.

Iran wants to talk and the U.S. media blacks out their overtures. I don't have any illusions about just how power hungry and fucked up the clerics who run Iran are, but if they want to talk doesn't it behoove the U.S., since it is supposedly run by adults, to at least acknowledge this positive step instead of getting their surrogates in the U.S. Corporate Conservative Media to institute a blackout? I mean, if one were so inclined one might think the CCM not mentioning the peace talk overtures is a sign that they are fully in the pocket of the pro war with Iran group.

We are creating a whole generation of Iraqis that hate America more than they ever did under Saddam Hussein. Here is the last paragraph of the text, taken from http://gorillasguides.com/, via Alternet.org. From the page: "This posting is specifically for the tiny minority of our readers who are American (or British). What you are looking at are just some of the reasons why we hate you. What you are looking at are just some of the reasons why for as long as their are Americans in our country our country will never be at peace. Irak is for the Irakis. This is my home not yours and you're completely and utterly unwelcome here. Mohammed Ibn Laith"

I remember when republicans would rant and rave about personal responsibility and how most Americans didn't ever accept their fair share. But as usual it was just more of the same of the "Do as I say, not as I do" philosophy they came to embrace. "I don't recall" is the new mantra of the political right, now that they sense they might have to shoulder some responsibility for not telling the truth.

From the page: "Specifically, the plan "recommends the creation of a super-Intelligence Support Activity, an organization it dubs the Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG), to bring together CIA and military covert action, information warfare, intelligence and cover and deception. For example, the Pentagon and CIA would work together to increase human intelligence (HUMINT) forward/operational presence and to deploy new clandestine technical capabilities." The purpose of P2OG would be in "â€stimulating reactions†among terrorists and states possessing weapons of mass destruction, meaning it would prod terrorist cells into action, thus exposing them to â€quick-response†attacks by US forces."[2] In other words, commit terror to incite terror, in order to react to terror. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2002 that, "The Defense Department is building up an elite secret army with resources stretching across the full spectrum of covert capabilities. New organizations are being created. The missions of existing units are being revised," and quoted then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as saying, "Prevention and preemption are ... the only defense against terrorism."[3] Chris Floyd bluntly described P2OG in CounterPunch, saying, "the United States government is planning to use "cover and deception" and secret military operations to provoke murderous terrorist attacks on innocent people. Let's say it again: Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the other members of the unelected regime in Washington plan to deliberately foment the murder of innocent people--your family, your friends, your lovers, you--in order to further their geopolitical ambitions."" Whichever member of the One Party/Two Faction political system we have in this country walks away with the preznitsee will still have this same exact plan in place and will continue to put you, your family, and everyone else in this country at risk to prove that their Global War On Terror isn't just a great scheme to make defense contractors more money.
