The fish rots from the head down. For almost 8 years the Shrub junta has inculcated a sense among the "authorities" in this country that since all said "authorities" are the good guys they can do whatever they want as long as they say they are doing it for the protection of us all. When you have a sense of lawlessness among those who are supposed to enforce the laws you have instances like the one in this blog post play out. Welcome to the United Polices States of America! I hope that some of our wonderful Officers of the Peace have gone over to China to check out the Special Olympics, as well as brush up on all the new surveillance technology the Chinese communist government are rolling out to further control their people. I'm sure Shrub is getting a boner looking at all of the cool ways the Chinese Communists have to spy on the populace. It's nice when totalitarian regimes can get together to discuss new methods of control, don't you think?

Yes, the coward who went into a Unitarian church over this last weekend was obviously a nut, but he was a nut who believed the eliminationist rhetoric spewed by the conservatives and republicans in the U.S.A. You can't end up having 30 odd years of demonizing "the left", liberals, and any of the supposed identity groups that compromise the Democratic constituency without somebody finally putting the thinly veiled threats that come out of the mouths of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and the other mouth pieces for the conservative movement in this country to action. This coward explicitly mentions liberals as the reason he did what he did, and that comes directly out of the rhetoric used by the Right Wing Media in this country. 30 years of telling the public that liberals were going to destroy their society is finally paying off for the conservatives, but I don't think they wanted publicity like this at all.

You can take a horse to water, but you can't make it drink... You can explain things to idiots, but that doesn't mean they will understand what you are saying... Naomi Klein finds out that even though people who are involved in the business world SEEM intelligent, they are just you plain old dumbass who doesn't want to hear anything that will upset their view of the world, even if their view is incorrect.

Even the nice "liberals" who host a show on the very "liberal" NPR think torture is fucking hilarious. Good thing I quit listening to Nice Polite Republicans right around March of 2003 when their bleating about how the U.S. had to invade the sovereign country of Iraq to get all those nasty WMD's reached a very annoying level. I haven't tuned in since then and won't ever again.

From the page: "One of the most glaring problems with Movement Conservatism is that they let Jonah Goldberg belong to it. A worse problem is that they let him speak. To compound this error, they give him something of a prominent platform." Making Jonah Goldberg look like an idiot is like trying to make Mount Everest look like a huge mountain. A bit redundant but always enjoyable to behold.

From the page: "The issue is not -- as one extremely confused Obama-cheering blogger put it -- that Obama has done "something contrary to what conventional wisdom as dictated by a small coterie of prominent bloggers agrees with," nor is it -- as an equally confused, Obama-cheering Ed Kilgore put it -- that Obama is "stray[ing] from Democratic Party orthodoxy or from strict down-the-line partisanship" by "expressing heretical thoughts on FISA" (incidentally, it's amazing how the rule of law, the Fourth Amendment and accountability for Bush lawbreaking have now -- in service of defending Obama -- all been instantaneously reduced to nothing more than quirky, self-absorbed, petty blogger "dictates," and Obama's disregarding of those core political values is a bold demonstration that he won't be held hostage to anyone's narrow partisan demands). The issue is that Obama has repeatedly, over the course of the last year, made emphatic commitments and clear statements about his own core political values that are completely irreconcilable with his support for the FISA bill. It's possible to recognize that someone is just a "politician" and still trust that they're essentially telling you the truth about what they think and what they'll do."
