Iraq, not faring so well under a Free Market economy, but hey kids, just remember... Capitalism, it works! (but only when you have an incredibly managed market like, say, the one in the U.S.)

I had no idea that this many companies were having to close stores around the nation. Also, all of the Bennigan's/Steak & Ale restaurants are closing, along with the Boscov department stores in the northeast of the country.

Things are much worse economically in the U.S. than we want to admit, and if you are in the position of having to take time off to go to a dentist or doctor for a check you probably already can't afford, you face the real possibility of being laid off due to decreased production and costing your employer more money in insurance premiums. The house of cards known as the U.S. economy is becoming more unstable every day. Neither candidate for the preznitsee have viable plans to tackle health care, the deflating economy, and getting out of the mess that are Iraq and Afghanistan, yet we are told by both campaigns that help is on the way. I don't know if it really is, but I do know that increasingly the citizens of the U.S. need it badly.

If there is newly discovered oil in Iran you can bet The Scowl and his cohorts in all of the western oil companies are now deciding who gets the lion share if a war with Iran is started. I am betting that Dutch Shell and BP will get whats leftover from ExxonMobile.

You gotta love the Free & Nationalized Market! I hope that fucker Milton Friedman is spinning in his coffin because this, yet again, shows just how flawed his whole school of economic thought is in reality. Things look awesome on paper, not so much when implemented in the real world.

From the page: "Chances are increasing that the U.S. may need to bail out Fannie Mae and the smaller Freddie Mac, former St. Louis Federal Reserve President William Poole said in an interview. Freddie Mac owed $5.2 billion more than its assets were worth in the first quarter, making it insolvent under fair value accounting rules, he said. The fair value of Fannie Mae's assets fell 66 percent to $12.2 billion, data provided by the Washington-based company show, and may be negative next quarter, Poole said." Insolvency of mortgage lenders and the banks they are tied with will increase. Then look out! Time to make a run on the banks! And after that happens....bad, bad times for the U.S. This whole mess could have been avoided had Congress not cared more about preserving Shrubs "legacy" and spying on American citizens.

I haven't noticed prolonged vacancies but I have noticed that it is taking longer to construct strip malls and to fit out the interiors for the prospective businesses. What used to be a 4 to 5 month process has gone on to be almost a year long process. I don't think many store closings have been going on in my neck of the woods, but it does take at least a year for most economic fluctuations to cause the beginnings of a ripple in Oklahoma, so I don't think this type of thing will be prevalent until this time next year.

From the page: "June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Citigroup Inc., the bank that's lost more than any other in the collapse of the U.S. mortgage market, plans to fire as much as 10 percent of the about 65,000 employees worldwide in its investment-banking division, the Wall Street Journal reported." There are going to be some fairly upset investment bankers and shit workers after today.
